It was July 1969 when the world watched a grainy black and white image on TV that said “live from the moon”. An estimated 600 million people tuned in to watch as Neil Armstrong descended a ladder and stepped out onto the lunar surface. This represented the culmination of a decade long space race with the objective of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”

With such an achievement, the sky was no longer the limit. Visions of moon colonies and interplanetary space exploration were on the horizon. But 50 years on, we know that those visions have not eventuated...

But what if they had?
