Home Edition 05
With the dreaded Crits behind us, we take a moment to explore the rare, peaceful snapshots of student life. This week we visit John Golena and Sophia Ying in their home studios during the chaos that is Crit time.
What has been your biggest challenge in adapting to working from home?
The biggest struggle is wifi - I don’t think she likes me. We don’t seem to connect…
What are some lessons you've learned from last year's level 4 lockdown?
I learnt that you have to create spaces for specific things. I only do work at my table and avoid working on my bed otherwise I blur the lines between sleep and work and end up screwing myself over!
What is something you’ve enjoyed about working from home?
I genuinely enjoy how I don’t have to care about how I look. I don’t like wearing clothes, I just want to be free and easy! When there was studio in real life, I didn’t mind dressing up but once I got home, I just wanted to get into some sweats and massive oversized shirt.
What has been your biggest challenge in adapting to working from home?
With Architecture being such a collaborative degree, I’ve found it really difficult to communicate with tutors and peers compared to pre-lockdown. So many ideas come to me when I’m in a conversation, which far more difficult through Zoom.
My motivation now comes and goes, so learning to achieve an appropriate amount of work everyday has been a real struggle. I either work endlessly or procrastinate endlessly… with the latter being the most common!
What are some lessons you've learned from last year's level 4 lockdown?
Try to make everyday a little different! My days tend to blur into one, so planning activities to create some sort of distinction has been good. Mondays I plan my week, Tuesdays I have a drink, etc.
What is something you’ve enjoyed about working from home?
I’m really grateful for the short commute from my bed to desk. The time I used to spend on transport I can now spend in bed to get that much-longed-for 8 hours!
